Cozying up in front of a roaring fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate is the quintessential way to relax. It’s even better when it is outdoors, and you can chill beneath the stars, or fall asleep with a soft breeze in your hair. Outdoor fireplaces have become a popular backyard feature, and fortunately, have become extremely budget friendly. And the best part? They are considered a ‘home improvement’ and can add extra value to your home. A fireplace also adds a captivating focal point to your backyard and gives you a chance to enjoy the outdoors all year ‘long.

Advantages of Having Backyard Fireplace

Outdoor fireplaces provide the ultimate in leisure and delight. After all, who doesn’t love to snuggle up next to a warm fire? But are they worth the investment and time to have built? Yes! They provide a host of advantages, with the main reasons being:

Increased Home Value

Believe it or not, an outdoor fireplace can add value to your home. Any home improvement that beautifies your space and makes it more functional, increases its value. And while its sole purpose is to add to your own personal enjoyment of your home, it is a huge bonus factor for any future resell.

Extra Living Space

Homeowners understand that increasing their living space makes the home more ‘livable’ and user friendly.  Most outdoor fireplaces are built on an existing patio slab, or a slab that has been poured to make a larger outdoor living area. Outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchens, and outdoor fireplaces all help create a functional entertainment area not only for your family, but guests as well.

Outdoor Enjoyment – All Year Long

Cold weather is no match for a roaring backyard fireplace, and as most homeowners know, winters can get pretty frosty. Extend your outdoor time with a fireplace that warms your patio, and allows you to get some necessary fresh air during those stuffy winter months. If you have an outdoor kitchen, then the warmth from your fireplace will also make your outdoor cooking simpler and more enjoyable.

Planning Your Outdoor Fireplace

Designing your fireplace is an infinite as your imagination! Styles range from rustic, to contemporary and everything in-between. There are only a few things to consider when working on the design:

Choose Your Fuel Source

Backyard fireplaces have different fuel options, so determining which one to use is as simple as understanding what works best for your environment. Smaller patios can benefit from an electric source, which entails simply flipping a switch. Areas that are more open, can take advantage of an open flame fueled by gas or logs.

  • Natural Gas – This type of fuel source can be very cost efficient and easy to use. If your patio currently has a gas stub, a line can run beneath or around your slab and tied into your new fireplace. This allows you to start your fire using either real wood or gas logs. If your patio requires a gas line, or needs a current line extended, we can easily install one for you.
  • Propane – Traditionally used for grills, propane can also be used to fuel your fire. An access hatch behind your fireplace makes easy work of switching out propane tanks. A disadvantage of propane is the need to replace the tank when it runs out, which can be often, depending on how much your use your fireplace.
  • Wood burning – The simplest of the fuel sources, wood is laid into the fireplace grate and lit using any manner of accelerant. Pure wood provides a rich, smoky air and can be quite nostalgic. The advantages of wood burning, are your ability to cook over the fire, as well as eliminating the need for a gas or electric line.
  • Electric – Electric fireplaces are extremely easy to light, since you just flip a switch. Electricity must be extended from your home to the fireplace, so this can entail some work by a licensed electrician.

Whichever fuel source you choose, we will incorporate it into a functional, budget friendly design. Simple and efficient are the key words to consider, when making your fuel choice.

Design

Fireplaces can be freestanding, or built-in to tie into your existing patio or roof line. The beauty of their design, is that they can be constructed to match and complement your home, whether that is brick, stone or stucco, or it can be its own unique outdoor feature.

Designing your fireplace starts with the material itself. There are a variety of materials to choose from, and each has its own unique style:

  • Brick
  • Stone
  • Concrete
  • Stucco
  • Stacked stone
  • Granite
  • Marble
  • Tile

All materials used in the construction are fire and weather resistant and hand-stacked by expert masons. Natural materials, such as stone, marble, granite, and even brick, are extremely hardy and can last for years and years.

Size

Fireplaces can be any size that fits within your budget and home improvement plan. They can be built on your current slab, next to it, or out in your yard. Many backyard fireplaces are tied to your existing patio roof. However, they can also be freestanding if you do not have a patio cover or wish it to be a standalone. They can range from small to extremely large depending on your budget.
